We recently printed some super cool t-shirts for the guys at Icon Industries. Their style is a perfect mix of graphic art with a street and urban influence. We wanted to find out more about the label and what they’re into…
Your style is a fusion of paint, illustration and graffiti. Do you do your own graffiti?
It’s a mix of stencil, photograph, marker pen and computer illustrations. Graffiti – well it depends who is asking. The law – no. An art appreciator – hell yeah, we stencil when ever we can. We like art that tells a story – whether it’s controversial, funny or shocking.
What artists/designers inspire you and why?
We’re really into the Bristol art scene – Inkie and the guys at Upfest. However, we also get inspiration from the likes of Paul Smith and other high-end British designers. We do a lot of traveling, so we’re always taking a lot of photos too.
Why did you choose to create your own T-shirt line?
We’d come up with some great graphics and really wanted to share them with people. Our mission statement: Icon Industries aim is to make affordable art accessible to all.
Where do you sell your printed tees?
We are new to the market – but currently selling them on ebay, on our own site www.icon-industries.co.uk and a few select stores in London.
What’s your favourite website or blog at the moment? thefancy.com – love that site. A great mix of products and an amazing way to share inspiration, it really gets the creative juices flowing.
What advice would you give to someone who was thinking about coming up with their own collection of statement T-shirts?
Start small, start simple and build from there. Get a good website!
We’re constantly on the hunt for new t-shirt shaped greatness – so obviously we get a bit happy when we come across a nice bunch of creative tees that work really well collectively. We print all sorts of jobs here at Icon Printing, and just like our print jobs, we find that inspiration comes in all forms too!
We recently stumbled across these brilliant t-shirts by The Unrefinery.com and couldn’t help but love them. They sort of speak for themselves – but what really impressed us is that they’re so simple, yet very witty and very clever. It just shows you don’t have to think up long-winded, elaborate designs in order to create successful artwork for t-shirts.

The T-Shirt Deli puts a new twist on personalising shirts. The concept is pretty simple: your t-shirt design, served hot-off-the-press and wrapped to-go with a side of chips. Awesome!
Owner, Ninel moved to Chicago 13 years ago. After years of copy-writing for beer commercials, she left the advertising industry to start the T-Shirt Deli. She first envisioned the deli when she thought of several funny sayings to put on t-shirts. Rather than simply customising a few of her own shirts, she decided she wanted to help others produce shirts too – “Much like you can customise your sandwich in a New York-style deli.” She says, “After all, not everyone shares my sense of humor, and as it turns out, people absolutely love the opportunity to get creative, and see their own idea turned into a wearable product.”
She searched far and wide for gleaming white deli cases, rolls of perfectly waxed butcher paper, brightly colored stickers, and open-air wicker baskets to display our freshest selection of tees. She also chooses to use “homegrown”American Apparel brand shirts, and started to stock as many font choices and colors as cheeses in a New York deli.
Today, there are two stores in Chicago – one in Bucktown and another in Andersonville, and they just celebrated their seventh anniversary. They take orders on their website, and offer a fun ‘catering’ service. Like any other caterer, they travel to parties, work events, etc., but instead of dishing out spaghetti, they make and serve shirts on-site for the attendees.
Over the years, customers have had many creative ideas to share, though often their designs or text are based on inside jokes, nicknames and other cryptic items only known them and their friends.
It’s always so refreshing to see something done with such a twist! Good job!

We’ve been meaning to do a blog post on this brand for a little while now. Not only because they’re a fan of Gotham typeface as much as we are (our new logo is Gotham…keep your eyes peeled, it’s coming soon – along with our new website!), but we’ve recently noticed just how successful they’ve become in their unique market. They’ve perfected the blend of chilled, surf lifestyle combined with the sophistication of a big city. We can’t fault their brand identity, we’d happily sport a plain white tee with their black Saturdays logo across it. It’s wonderfully simple but equally as eye catching.
You’ll be surprised to know that they actually are a surf shop in NYC, it’s not just a fancy name. You may have also seen their logo sitting upon paper coffee cups – don’t worry that’s not some kind of mistake either, just another string to their bow.
In late ’09, downtown Manhattan became the site for Saturdays Surf. The store, which caters to New York’s surfers and coffee drinkers alike, is a small boutique focused on clean, stylish apparel, classic hardgoods, and a sampling of finer accessories and footwear. In little over a year the store has become an icon of sorts, and its private label is becoming a brand in its own right.
Out the back our their store is a fully planted yard that acts as a wood-decked sanctuary from the streets. It is a place to enjoy their coffee, hang out with friends or have a quiet meeting. Sounds ideal!
This post is a bit geek chic, but we just couldn’t help ourselves! Dodge & Burn have created an awesome line of photo/camera inspired tees that are hand screen printed on American Apparel. This statement on their website couldn’t be more true…
“We’re neck-deep into the digital age and more people than ever are taking photos. I believe that regardless of whether you use your iPhone or an old Leica screw mount camera to capture your decisive moment, you are part of the history of photography. Dodge & Burn is here to remind you of this.“
You may not use or even recognise these particular cameras that are intricately illustrated as their t-shirt artwork, but that doesn’t matter. Like Dodge & Burn stated, these days everyone and anyone can be a photographer and can appreciate this medium on any level.
Another nice detail these tees have is a screen printed tagless label in the neckline of the shirt. This is a post production service we offer at Icon Printing. In this case it would involve removing the existing American Apparel label and printing in that spot or even attaching your own custom label. If it’s a small run of tees we recommend the heat seal transfer version of tagless label – to keep costs down, otherwise screen printing (like the one by D&B) looks fantastic, is long lasting and is more comfortable to wear.

These t-shirts were DTG (direct to garment) printed on one of our most popular unisex tees by Gildan. This brand of crew neck t-shirt is always a fantastic choice due to the quality craftsmanship – making them super durable. They’re 100% cotton, which is an ideal surface for all print methods.
American label Make Believe Clothinghave some awesome screen printed items for sale on their website. Their “thang” is classically inspired designs with a modern twist. Up on the Make Believe blog they have photo documented festivals they have attended – for which they’ve created a line of specifically “made for” tees and totes.
Their prints are inspired by the aesthetic appeal of the 1950s simplicity, composing designs that are both timeless and appealing to all generations. They’re into one colour prints – two at most, keeping things clean and unfussy. Some of their designs are pre-distressed at the artwork stage, which adds to the retro feel.

How cool are these!? Unreal Estate have created a line of t-shirts that are inspired by a watercolour animation. Each project is created in tune with a particular theme or as a response to an existing creation or piece of art. These are all thermally reactive, which is such an awesome way of reflecting the qualities of watercolour. American Apparel came up with a similar concept a few years ago, their version went from either a blue or coral tone to white.
The tees were made with skaters in mind, we like the way they change to another colour when warm – probably creating a “tie dye” sort of look, pretty cool stuff!
