SCREEN PRINTING
T shirt screen printing is one of the of the most popular ways of printing garments because it produces high quality, long lasting prints that are more durable that some other printing techniques.
Icon Printing offer a wide selection of screen printed clothing and promotional material including t shirts and cotton bags.

T shirt Screen Printing Process
Your design or logo first must be separated into individual colours and this is usually done using vector based programs like Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw.
To make the process clearer refer to the illustration below whilst reading the following text. If you have several colours in your design (C), each colour will be printed individually. Let’s say you’re printing a Union Jack on your t shirt. Each colour of the Union Jack will have it’s own screen. The screen consists of a metallic frame (E) with a very fine mesh (D), like a large sieve with tiny holes through which the coloured ink (A) is pushed using a squeegee blade (B). So for a Union Jack, we need 3 screens in total - a screen for the red, one for white and one for blue colour.
One by one the screens are placed on your t-shirt manually or automatically and the ink is forced through the relevant screen onto the t shirt or garment. Once all the screens have been applied, hey presto - you have your printed t-shirts (F) just as you designed them!
Because it is more complicated to set up screen printing and one colour is applied at a time it is more suited to medium to large print runs (normally 25 items or more). It’s not the most economical way if you want just a couple items due to the set-up costs and that is why we have a minimum order of 25 items for screen printing.

Printing Pro's & Con's
The table below quickly highlights the pro’s and con’s of each printing technique we offer. We favour screen printing as it produces the best quality results but direct to garment printing is great for vibrant full colour prints & transfer printing for low quantity orders, where budget is important.

Screen Printing Pricing & Set-up Costs
Screen Printing involves a set up charge which is to cover the cost of having the design made into a screen. One screen is required for each colour in your design. It’s a one-time cost of £25.00 per screen.
Remember that if you have a different design in different print positions (i.e. front & back), a screen will be needed for each design. However, if the same design is on the front and the back for example, only one screen will need to be produced. Additonally, if we’re printing onto dark coloured garments a flash screen or base layer is required. Add an extra colour if printing onto dark garments to cover this.
There is also a printing charge which covers the cost of the labour, materials and inks. Its based on the quanitity of items you want screen printed with the same design or logo and applies to each screen. For a bespoke price, please complete the quote form.
